January 2007            Robert E. Kleinpeter
Bob Kleinpeter has been honored by selection to the first edition of Louisiana Super Lawyers, published as a supplement to Louisiana Life magazine in the January, 2007 issue. Started in 1991 as a consumer’s guide to the best attorneys in the state of Minnesota, annual Super Lawyers listings now appear for 48 states. A statewide mail survey of licensed attorneys in each state with more than 5 years experience is used to identify the best lawyers they have personally observed in practice. The candidate pool is reviewed for objective evidence of professional accomplishment such as honors and awards, verdicts, special certifications, bar activities, professional lectures and writings, and other outstanding achievements. A review of bar standing and any disciplinary status is made to ensure there are no adverse outstanding matters affecting a nominated attorney. Candidates are grouped according to firm size and their areas of legal practice. Final selections are limited to the top 5% of the total number of lawyers in the state.

Bob is interviewed and quoted extensively in the January 17 issue of the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report feature story on the shifting legal landscape for Southeast Louisiana caused by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Baton Rouge has seen a large influx of lawyers and legal support staff and services. For some the changes are likely to be permanent, as New Orleans will be a significantly smaller city for the foreseeable future. Corporate lawyers have been the first to return to practice in New Orleans, but small firms and plaintiff lawyers have much more difficult problems, for example, as the Civil Courts in New Orleans are not expected to be ready until March, and mail service to call jurors is still spotty. Bob predicted the Legislature may consider temporary shifting of some trials to Baton Rouge at the upcoming Special Session this spring.
